There are four major golf courses of international standard in Cyprus, and more are planned. The Cypriots intend to take advantage of the island’s good location, favorable terrain and favorable weather conditions, which make golf in Cyprus practicable virtually all year round.
Golf on the island is regulated by the Cyprus Golf Federation, which is a member of the Cyprus Sports Organization and the Cyprus Olympic Committee, and is also a member of the International Golf Federation and the European Golf Association. It organizes international tournaments, Cyprus Open Golf Championships and Cyprus Amateur Open Championships, golf programs and events for members.
Aphrodite Hills Golf Club
The field is located in Kouklia, between Paphos and Limassol. Opened in 2002, it is part of a larger residential and resort complex. Stretching over 6289 meters, it was designed by renowned architect Cabell Robinson to meet international standards, while at the same time stunningly landscaped.
What can players look forward to? 18 holes, Par 71 (5 x par 3, 9 x par 4, 4 x par 5), 5 tee positions, 2 water obstacles. Attractions: challenging bunkers, multi-level greens, Bermuda grass fairways, a ravine, and hole 7 is one of the most spectacular par 3s in Europe. The course also has a practice area, and qualified golf instructors are available.
Elea Estate Golf Club
Located in Cologne, 8 km from Paphos, designed by Sir Nick Faldo, a six-time major championship winner. It offers stunning views, interesting terrain and attractions for discerning players. It is part of a larger complex. It has been in existence since 2010, but has already gained recognition in Europe and around the world.
Technical matters: 18 holes, Par 71 (4 x par 3, 11x par 4, 3x par 5), 6,195 meters, 4 tee positions, 2 water obstacles. Plus many holes hidden in the Mediterranean vegetation. And hole 9 is a real challenge. Plus an area for short game and for practice.
Minthis Golf Club
This beautiful yet challenging golf course is located near a 12th-century monastery, and the game is accompanied by views of the Trodos mountain range. Designed in 1994 by Donald Steel and extensively renovated in 2007 by Mackenzie & Ebert. It is located in Tsada near Paphos and is part of a luxury complex. It has been integrated into the naturally rolling terrain and stunning Mediterranean vegetation. It has been awarded the GEO certification, which underscores a commitment to sustainability and a friendly approach to the environment.
And what’s on the course? 18 holes, Par 72, 5902 meters, 4 tee positions, 28 bunkers, 2 lakes and one green on an island. Several of the holes are challenging, requiring a lot of focus and precision, but offer great opportunities and a chance for beautiful results. For the less advanced, there is a golf academy and practice areas.
Secret Valley Goolf Resort
In existence since 1996, the club is located in Kouklia, between Paphos and Limassol. It was designed by Tony Jacklin, winner of the British Open and US Open. It is located near the place where Aphrodite was supposedly born, in a picturesque valley with naturally shaped rock formations. Part of the course is illuminated to enjoy the charm of the game in the evening.
Technical details: 18 holes, Par 71 (5x par 3, 9x par 4, 4x par 5), 5,714 meters, 6 tee positions. Plus a river and 2 lakes populated with wildlife, 2 full-size bunkers. Plenty of practice facilities, including an indoor golf simulator.
Close to other attractions
The golf courses are located so that various attractions of Cyprus are not far away. You can visit the archaeological parks in and around Paphos, you can go hiking in the Trodos Mountains, and you can visit at least some of the ten UNESCO World Heritage painted churches. There are beaches for the weary, and seaside resorts for the thirsty for company and fun. During breaks, you can sample local cuisine and wine, and it’s worth reaching for Cyprus’ most famous wine, Commandaria. For those who like to get moving, there are numerous hiking and biking trails, underwater wrecks and sculptures, and numerous museums telling the story of Cypriot history.
